The Puerto Rican owl is a small owl endemic to Puerto Rico. It's 7.9 to 9.8 inches long with a wing length of 6.1 to 6.7 inches. It has three color morphs: brown, rufous and a rare grey that can only be found in dry forested areas. It can be hard to see because it spends the day resting, camouflaged in thick vegetation. The "Mucarito" is common throughout the main island of Puerto Rico in humid forest, dry forest and urban areas. It's a nocturnal hunter feeding mostly on insects, lizards, small birds, and rodents. The breeding season is from April to June. The Spanish name "Múcaro", it's originated from a Taino word for owl.
